Most NBSC Trails, including Trout Lake are now 'OPEN' - See Details on 'TRAIL CONDITIONS' page
Well here it is in early February and we’ve reached the half-way point in our season (I hope). We are all tired about talking about the weather but after opening the OFSC Interactive Trail Guide and seeing everything south and west of Gravenhurst ‘CLOSED’ I guess we can take some consolation from that.
Our trails are currently in very good condition and although we have had problems with all 3 groomers, the down time has been minimal thanks to the great work of John Miller, Ed Sheffield and Tom O’Reilly. Having spare parts on hand is always helpful but The Shop Industrial ships out whatever we need in short order. Mark Walli of The Shop is the “Groomer Doctor on Call” and offers his help by phone or in-person as required.
Unfortunately NBSC wasn’t awarded a new groomer by the OFSC but we were pleased to see that our two neighbouring Clubs, both Mattawa and South Shore – Restoule were successful. Having two groomers awarded to our District out of only eight in the province was huge.
A lot of work the Club did before the snow has really paid off. The ditching and flattening of the cross slopes on the TOP AD hill north of Highway 63 has improved that difficult climb and the recent 20 mm of rain did not cause icing of that heavily used trail. We installed ice-picks on the ‘North’ groomer as backup insurance as we have been stuck on that steep ‘S’-hill previously.
The widening and flattening of the TOP A2 trail behind the Nordic Ski Club has provided a noticeable improvement to that heavily used trail and the brushing of the first half of NB302 to Turtle Lake has really opened up that run.
Trout Lake is absolutely critical to our trail system and this year’s weather gave rise to whether it would in fact be safe to stake. Fortunately the Club has one terrific volunteer, Andy Vaillancourt, who checks the lake ice regularly and installs those many hundreds of corridor markers and signs on TOP D, TOP A1 and TOP A2. A big thank you to Andy and his assistant Charlie Bemrose and also Director Paul Duquette for getting those trails staked so well.
You would be shocked to know that NBSC is running so effectively with only about 10-12 regular Volunteers. It seems that no one wants to volunteer their time, even for a day or so of brushing. We need to avoid ‘burnout’ of those key people and of course some of us aren’t getting any younger either. We lost two experienced groomer operators this season so it has been a constant struggle for our Operations Manager, John Miller, to train new operators, maintain the fleet and groom himself, all the while doing his regular day job. This Club needs some help, especially a mechanic or someone who can handle the Talon Lake grooming.
This site should be your first stop before heading out to play on some of the "greatest snow on earth". We will roll out the white carpet for you and your family and friends and provide you with all the information you need to plan your way through our winter wonderland of snow-sculpted forests and frozen lakes. It's pure excitement!
Our club pays for the grooming of our extensive, exciting trail system by selling trail permits, so in order to keep your favourite North Bay trails in top condition, please purchase your permit from us.
Those who are currently members of our club, thank you for your ongoing support. Feel free to send us your comments, or provide us with your email address so that we can keep in contact with you about upcoming news, events, permit specials, and hot trails.
If you are not yet a member of our club, we encourage you to buy your next permit from the North Bay Snowmobile Club. In the meantime, send us your email address or join our facebook group and we will keep you advised of our events and trail conditions so you can see what you're missing.
Thanks for visiting our new site. We hope you enjoy it, and our trails!
